The cylinder head - an indispensable part of an internal combustion engine

The head is an essential component of an internal combustion engine, mounted on top of the engine block. It contains the intake and exhaust ducts, valve seats, valves, spark plugs (in petrol engines) or injectors (in diesel engines). The head is also where the combustion chambers are located. Its main function is to seal the combustion chambers and to allow the correct flow of the fuel-air mixture and exhaust gases.

Why is the head so important?

  • Regulation of combustion parameters: The cylinder head regulates the combustion process in the engine, which has a direct impact on its power and energy efficiency.
  • Closing combustion chamber: Plays a key role in closing the combustion chamber, thus ensuring optimum conditions for combustion processes, which is fundamental for efficient engine operation.
  • Lubrication and cooling: The cylinder head ensures constant lubrication of the engine components, which is essential to keep the engine running smoothly. It also allows excess heat generated during the combustion process to be dissipated.

How do I look after cylinder head?

Heads should be inspected regularly for cracks, leaks and gasket wear. It is recommended to check the head every 30,000 km or every three years. If there are signs of overheating, uneven engine operation or power drops, immediate diagnosis and possible head replacement may be necessary.
